I’ve been slowly getting rid of some of my old console games (the ones worth anything, at least) because I just don’t have the space. I had kept collecting and putting things in boxes in my basement crawlspace with the vague hope that one day we’ll own a larger home where I could have a proper retro game / movie room. However, I’ve come to realize that probably isn’t in the cards anytime soon (or ever).
So I’ve been selling some stuff on eBay while also trading other things in at local game stores. But when I started looking at my PS2 collection I couldn’t bring myself to part with any of it. When we talk about “desert island consoles,” this is it. Such an insane variety of genres within genres, and I still feel like I learn about a cool PS2 game I’d never heard of like every week.
It’s a wonderful system to collect for: nice manuals and if you’re not hellbent on getting every RPG / horror release, many games are relatively affordable (especially if you go with Japanese versions). I decided to unpack all my PS2 stuff and set up a desk with a CRT to play on and a monitor hooked up to my PC with an Elgato to capture footage.

When I look at my shelves my first thought is “man, there’s some pretty cool stuff here that I don’t actually remember buying, nice.” My second thought is “damn, I wish I hadn’t sold _____.” Some games I sold over the years are cheap and easy to find (the Devil May Cry trilogy for example) and others are, well, let’s not talk about Kuon.
There is plenty of cool shit that I have and want to revisit, but I was kind of struck by how many games I own but have never actually played.
Well, time to fix that.

Stoked for (another) summer of PlayStation 2. Living in my world sucks, but playing in theirs rocks.
All photos by me (obvs).
