HP Pavilion Slimline s5510f

This HP Pavilion Slimline s5510f is a desktop PC that comes equipped with Windows 7 and one of the worst GPUs NVIDIA ever made. On one hand it’s slow and can’t really play most games released after the year 2000. But on the other you can pick it up and carry it with one hand so I don’t totally hate it.

Here are the specs as according to the sticker on the side of the case:

The real highlight of the s5510f is Windows 7. This beloved OS is intuitive and generally speedy, but a bit hamstrung by the underpowered hardware here.

It doesn’t help that HP loaded this PC with bloat, most of which is running in the background by default.

No thank you HP

Most of the pre-installed HP software is media focused and completely redundant on top of Windows 7’s basic capabilities.

First thing I did was uninstall all of the HP nonsense, in addition to another background-running repeat offender, Norton.

bye

With all the unnecessary background applications gone, I began testing out some software. The DVD player via Windows Media Player? Totally fine!

I knew going into this that the GeForce 6150se was an extremely weak on-board GPU that would not be good for 3D gaming. As a result, I kept the games I tested in the late-90s / early-2000s range, and everything I tested looked and performed decently at 1024 x 768 resolution. (Note that all the games below were non-updated versions).

The PC came with a bunch of trials for casual games
Peggle Nights unsurprisingly plays fine
Unreal Tournament (1999) runs great
KISS: Psycho Circus had some frame rate hiccups, but that may have been from running the 1.0 version of the game
Midnight Club II didn’t feel like a stable 60fps, but wasn’t chugging either
GTA Vice City was fine, running somewhere between 30-60fps

This computer is more of a curio than anything. It’s a Windows 7 machine with a great form factor but poor performance. It’s neat to have in my collection, but not exactly something I’ll be using frequently.
