Bionic Commando (2009) In-game Ads

I recently picked up a copy of the 2009 Bionic Commando reboot for five bucks and man, what a trip. It’s an absurd, sometimes problematic game that is honestly pretty damn fun. The story is ridiculous, and Mike Patton’s (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) over the top delivery as the main character elevates it to a whole other level.

I’m only a couple of hours in, but Bionic Commando already feels like one of the most 2009 games ever (backhanded compliment). Aside from the gritty reboot edginess, another way Bionic Commando shows its 2009-ness is via the ads posted throughout the game.

First up we have this lovely trifecta: Pepsi, Dark Void, and Alienware.

Here we have Dark Void again.

…and more Dark Void.

What this tells me is that since the Dark Void ads are using the logo and key art from the game, that Dark Void is a video game that exists in the Bionic Commando 2009 universe.

The Capcom Unity forums, (advertised here with a Mega Man Legends servbot) also seem to exist in the universe.

I wonder if Spencer has ever logged in and argued with old school Bionic Commando fans about the direction of the series?

But here’s where things get weird. This Tricell ad seems like a legit representation of the company from the Resident Evil universe. Easter egg or something more?

I personally think it’s time Capcom explored this idea in earnest.
